23andMe has agreed to a $30 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit stemming from a 2023 data breach that impacted 6.9 million customers. The lawsuit claimed the company failed to adequately protect customer data and did not properly inform affected customers, particularly those with Chinese and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry who were specifically targeted. The settlement, which awaits court approval, includes cash payments and three years of credit monitoring and identity theft protection for impacted customers. 23andMe, while acknowledging the settlement is in their customers` best interest, cited financial difficulties and expects insurance to cover a significant portion of the settlement cost.
